So I have totally discovered Downton Abbey... and have discovered and started reading and writing fan fic for it (what can I say? I fell in love with Thomas surprisingly fast). A week and a half ago I was only just testing out the first episode. Somehow I marathoned the whole thing while home sick with a horrible, horrible flu, and, well.

I started my own slash story for it last night and continued it at work today and I... was totally NOT sitting at work researching historically appropriate lubes for this, nope nope nope. /suspiciously specific denial. XD A friend of mine in high school once said that if the teachers at our rather religious school knew what I used to sit there writing in notebooks that looked like, but weren't, class notes, I'd be expelled. I was always the Hermione of my class, so I wouldn't have been expelled from school - but let's just say I had cause to think of that conversation at work today. It's also probably a good thing that high school me didn't have a data plan, though I could not live without one now.

Seriously, though. I so need an accomplice in obsessing over Downton Abbey; anyone know anyone or any comms? Also - historically appropriate lube? Yeah, my searching didn't go so well so if anyone has suggestions... XD

Also - notice how the majority of my posts seem to start with "So I"...

Also also - am back in Montreal and I swear, one of these days I will end my bad-relationship-with-parents-imposed exile and come back and not leave.

So I actually signed up for Yuletide (about 5 minutes before the end of sign-ups, and I was literally unsure whether I wanted to do it up to the very last minute). I'm not thrilled about my assignment - it's something I've never written before, did not expect to be assigned, and really only listed for make-weight, so I could participate. I'm so not cut out for something where you have to offer to write for, like, 5 things - remember, every few years I get inspiration to write for one fandom, and that one fandom lasts me a six month to three year period in which I write it exclusively. I keep going back and forth between "This is so cool and I'm in the "in group" of cool people doing Yuletide and I can totally write this and broaden my horizons!" and totally kicking myself for getting into this.

Also, I haven't done a fic swap in precisely one million years so I have to re-figure-out how they even work. I had this urge to go find my recipient and be all "Hi, nice to meet you! I'm writing X fandom for you for Yuletide!" Totally the opposite of the point, right? And thank God I'm not organizing this, lol. You just know if I had to run something like this I'd be all "Hmm, Rebecca requested Velvet Goldmine and Rebecca really seems to want to write Velvet Goldmine, so Rebecca can write Velvet Goldmine for Rebecca! Wait, something seems off here..." Yeah, that would be me running one of these things.

Seriously, I hope this works out. It's my birthday a week and a bit before the fics are due, and it's gonna be a boring, lonely birthday, so I at least hope this works out well.

In other news, I am crazy inspired by an original fic idea that I don't know what to do with, either...

Title: Days in Summer
Pairing: Curt/Arthur
Part: 4/5
Part 1 is posted here.
Part 2 is posted here.
Part 3 is posted here (and was originally posted as a separate, one off piece, entitled Give and Take, before I realized it was actually a part of a longer narrative – i.e. this one).
Words: ~ 3200
Rating: R (mentions of drug use, sex)
Warning(s): Very brief mentions of past drug abuse. Some angst as well, if that counts.
Disclaimer: Velvet Goldmine and all associated characters and trademarks are the intellectual property of Todd Haynes and Miramax. This is a work of non-commercial fan fiction commentary on the film; no ownership is being claimed and no profit is being made.
Author’s note(s): In keeping with the unifying theme of Oscar Wilde references in this movie and this story, this part is peppered with several quotes/paraphrases from The Picture of Dorian Gray. (If you want the complete spotter's guide, just ask.) As well, this story has not been beta read, but feedback/concrit are absolutely treasured.

Arthur has never meant anything to anyone in his life, but sometimes, he really thinks that's changing. )

Author’s note(s): First, I posted this piece under the title Give and Take on September 1st, when I had only a vague idea for the longer narrative it could fit into. With some minor tweaking, it has now morphed into Part 3 of Days in Summer. Second, in keeping with the liberal use of Oscar Wilde quotes in this movie, the quote about regretting the loss of one’s worst habits is a paraphrase from The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Curt knows that just a few years ago, he would have destroyed someone like Arthur in about two months. )

*I am posting this, my second submission, for the Party Like It's 1999 Ficathon.

Title: Promising
Author: [livejournal.com profile] wild_huntress
Rating: PG-13/R
Pairing: None - Q/O, but it's VERY pre-slash (emphasis on the word 'pre')
Warnings: Implied sexual abuse/rape, slavery, slave!Obi-Wan, angst
Author's note: As I said, this is very pre-slash (Obi-Wan would need a hell of a long time in this continuity, in order to get to be ready for a romantic relationship, fall in love, wear down Qui-Gon's resolve/feeling that it would be inappropriate, etc). By the way, this was a response to challenge #4, a very specific Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon power dynamic, namely, young, vulnerable, heretofore abused! Obi-Wan running compassionate, do-gooder! Qui-Gon rather ragged, and using this dynamic as a way to get power over Qui-Gon. The power dynamic proved very difficult to bring out, especially in a relatively short (about 2000 words) piece.
