1) Finally got my old iPod speaker working and was able to bring down my old, no longer being used regularly iPod and listen to music while doing my swim in the apartment pool (got through just over half of Bowie's Hunky Dory, natch). That was awesome; I'd been looking to make swimming laps more interesting and was lucky enough to get the pool all to myself tonight. It may have been deserted because the water was kinda slimey, salty and gross. It's supposed to be a salt water pool but they may have overdone it tonight - yuck. But, oh well. (Took a good shower right after, so don't worry. =P)
2) I also think I'll use this journal to test out a new way to engage with fandoms. Inspired by the web site Polyvore and the one fashion blog I like to read, College Fashion and their "Inspired By" columns, I have been spending an inordinate amount of time trying to put together 'looks' inspired by the things I'm into, e.g. songs, books, TV shows and movies. This is not a project about cosplaying but, rather, is a way to use fannish interests to suggest things to do - or rather wear - for day to day.
Torchwood, for those who aren't sure, is the more adult spin off of Doctor Who. It focuses on Captain Jack Harkness, the suave, pansexual former Time Agent and companion of the Doctor, as he leads the Torchwood agency base in Cardiff. The Torchwood team, like the Doctor and his companions, works to keep Earth safe from various alien threats, but the show's subject matter is generally much grimmer, racier and darker than Doctor Who's.
Captain Jack Harkness
Captain Jack is accidentally rendered immortal in the first season of the revived Doctor Who, and uses many of his lifetimes to study and fight various nefarious alien phenomena. (The series explores the prospect of a never-ending life of being at the centre of various dangers quite intelligently.) He also gets around a lot sexually, but since he's ethical about it and played by the to-die-for John Barrowman, that's not exactly a problem.
The military style coat nods to Jack's most iconic item, while the khaki-inspired jeans and button down nod to his style as well. The watch is meant to allude to his time travelling, while the "Keep Calm and Carry On" iPhone case references Jack's various adventures in the World War II period. Lastly, the "hello" ring references his hallmark way of saying hello to various beings in the flirtiest way possible throughout time and space.
Gwen Cooper

Gwen Cooper is an ordinary policewoman who stumbles upon a crime scene in which Torchwood seems to be involved and, after some adventures, ends up filling a vacancy on the team. Gwen serves a similar role to the Doctor's companion by giving the audience a way to learn about the brave new world she's stumbling into, while also challenging Jack and the rest of the team to consider more ordinary human values even as they face extraordinary circumstances.
The New York Dolls shirt is similar to the one Gwen wears in season two episode one, from which I also took the quote - a quote that reflects the occasional and awesome zaniness of Who/Torchwood. The heart ring refers to the fact that Gwen serves as the heart of the team by challenging her colleagues to "help" more, while the handcuff bracelet refers to her prior experiences with the police.
Ianto Jones

Ianto starts off the series as the Torchwood "office boy", primarily responsible for behind the scenes work like getting the coffee, ordering the pizza and making sure that the various casualties in alien attacks are reported to have died of more Earthly causes. However, he takes several levels in badass throughout the series; he and Jack also eventually become lovers. (The presence of a canonical m/m pairing was totally a factor that led me to get into this show.)
The blazer alludes to Ianto's 'looking great in a suit,' something which first attracted Jack to him. (I would do this outfit either for a spiffier day at school e.g. TA-ing, or a casual Friday type thing at work.) The dinosaur bracelet nods to Ianto's helping Jack subdue a pterodactyl that fell through the local rift in time - another important moment early in their relationship - while the stopwatch alludes to a classic line from the series. Finally, the coffee themed tote bag is a play on Ianto's coffee making skills.
No Owen or Tosh because I just threw in the towel by that point.

Date: 2013-01-17 11:55 am (UTC)I do really want the Keep Calm and Carry On cover for my phone, though.

Date: 2013-01-17 03:13 pm (UTC)And Jack is absolutely smoking and a darling. I love him (and love those episodes too) so really I knew it was just a matter of time before I'd take up any spinoff involving him.
Lastly, I love all those Keep Calm and Carry On things too - and really, the problem with thinking up "looks inspired by" is that I end up wanting all these nice things that remind me of my obsessions. XD
